Welcome! Välkomna!

Welcome to Swedish Book Review on the web! SBR was launched in 1983. It publishes two main issues and a supplement every year. The main aim of SBR is to present Swedish literature to the English-speaking world. It carries translated extracts from the works of Swedish writers, often together with an introductory article.

Translation Support is back!
In the 2008:1 issue Helen Sigeland, Literature Officer with the Swedish Arts Council, outlines how the Council has assumed responsibility for the promotion of Swedish literature at international level.

2008:1 issue

Issue 2008:1Our 2008:1 issue contains cheering news about the reinstatement of Sweden's translation subsidy scheme, which after a period of uncertainty has now moved from the Swedish Institute to the Swedish Arts Council, where it will enjoy a vigorous new life.

2008:1 also includes a first look at the first volume in a new series of crime thrillers by Jenny Nordberg and Nuri Kino, both themselves investigative journalists. Neil Smith introduces his translation of an extract from the very start of a series anticipated to run to seven books in total.

We also feature the work of three very different writers for young adults: Inger Edelfeldt, who additionally provides some interesting comments on her own illustrations for Secret Face; Siv Widerberg, whose novel you're the cutest ;-) taps into growing concerns about young people's safety online; and Mikael Engström, whose remarkable Ice Dragon goes a long way to convincing the reader that the social services of the western world need transforming.

2006 Supplement: Writing for Young Adults

2006 SupplementA few years ago, it seemed that reading amongst young people in the UK was in something of a decline. Then along came a boy called Harry Potter, and suddenly children everywhere were immersed in a world of magic and fantasy. Children's books enjoy a high profile in Sweden, and a new genre has gradually sneaked in between the traditional children's book and adult fiction. It has not been a simple task to choose authors and extracts for this supplement. The final mixture includes black humour, laid-back wit, energy, a pragmatic approach to life's difficulties, and an unshakeable social conscience. ·  Full Details
