Translated and introduced by Eva Claeson

Elisabet HermodssonElisabet Hermodsson (b. 1927) has lived in Uppsala and Fårö for most of her life. Forced by a knee injury to abandon early ambitions of becoming a dancer, she grew interested and active in art, poetry, philosophy and politics. She has published eight collections of poetry, some half dozen essay collections, two volumes of prose fiction, four collections of songs and two musicals. Her paintings have been exhibited in numerous one-woman shows. In public collections she is represented at Moderna Museet, the drawing collections of Nationalmuseet, Statens Kulturråd and in other public buildings.

Original Title: Molnsteg
Publisher: Carlsson bokförlag, 1994, 127 pages. ISBN: 9177988167

Elisabet Hermodsson writes: “...In our modern world (we) human beings have lost the connection, the great creative connection of (our) lives with nature. A society which denies its kinship with nature, which does not feel respect or reverence for the intrinsic value of nature, denies also the value of human beings. Poetry and art are roads to the understanding of life and to a feeling of wholeness. Poetry and art provide us with the essence of existence. Poetry and art are the rites – the ceremonies with which we can save the world.”

Eva Claeson’s translations from Molnsteg (Clouds, Carlsson Bokförlag 1994) form part of her collection “Joy and Misery in the Lives of Contemporary Swedish Women Poets”, on which she has been working for some years. The (provisional) title is derived from a line in a poem by Margareta Ekström, included in the collection.
